Hello,
I am a very new user of Grass and have ran into a problem accessing
the Spearfish Database. At GRASS startup, I enter the location of spearfish
and mapset of PERMANENT, and receive an error message saying that I do not
have permission to access the data. I recently read the solution on the
newsgroup, but did not think to save it. My thank you to those who respond
directly to jerry@snowcrest.net.

The problem is that you are not the owner of PERMANENT. Instead, create a
mapset using your login as a name (that's the default, though you can
name it anything). Access (read only) to the PERMANENT mapset is through
the command "g.mapsets". Any map layers that are created or modified must
be in _your_ mapset. This is the normal protocol for using GRASS.
