My $.02: The only portion of XGRASS that is worth saving is xdigit, which
is a stand-alone program. We used to use XGRASS in our teaching
environment, but found it to be more trouble than it's worth. I am
currently teaching an academic GRASS class, and we will stick to the
command line, possibly using the Solaris version of GRASSLAND for
cartographic output. As both XGRASS and GRASSLAND still rely on
underlying command line structure, I feel that students benefit most by
learning the basics. As GRASSLAND is developed further, there may come a
time that I actually teach using it, but XGRASS is just too clunky for
everyday use (again, with the exception of xdigit!).
Perhaps you could talk to the LAS (GRASSLAND) folks and offer to do the
port to SGI
Just my opinion, not necessarily that of CAST or the
University of Arkansas (or my boss!).

present was that in the future (maybe in a few years), OSF may release a
version of Motif that no longer supports the _Xm functions currently used in
XGRASS. If this happens and the XGRASS code remains unchanged, then XGRASS wi

no longer compile.
Since CERL no longer supports code development for GRASS and XGRASS, any majo

changes are left to the grass programming community, and I thought that I wou

present this problem to that community to see what other grass programmers
thought. Apparently, this problem is not considered a major concern since you
are the first, (and so far the only) person to reply to my original post.Who knows, maybe someday, XGRASS will be replaced with some other interface
(possibly the one from GRASSLANDS although they don't have a version for the
SGI yet:)--
