In v.digit I am able to label all lines which are unlabeled by using the
"Bulk Label Remaining Lines" command. Is there a way to do this for areas?

Hello Virginia,
There is a program in src.alpha, or contrib, called v.alabel, it labels
all polygons with a user defined attribute.
