Color relief shading

Dear Grass users

I like to have references regarding "Color relief shading"
technique.

I know how hill shading can be achieved using
grey levels such as developed by B. Horn (1981), but I couldn't find
papers explaining COLOR hill shading algorithms.
My rough guess is the algorithm can be associated with inverse
HSI transform:
               elevation --> hue & saturation

               slope or gray level estimated through relief shading
                         --> intensity

Please let me know if anybody has seen such papers or has ideas.

Thanks in advance

The best method I have found yet, is to create a shade map with the
shade.rel.sh script in Grass, then use d.his to combine the H of the
elevation map (having chosen a nice colortable of course) and the I of
shade. S is not used. Hope this helps,
