continued heartburn over r.in.tiff

We continue to have troubles with r.in.tiff. Our attempts to import
digital image files from scanner-created tiff file format files is unsuc-
cessful. The raster map file and support files created by r.in.tiff ..seem..
to be in order but the display of this file in GRASS 4.1 is a blank white
screen or sometimes nothing (black). During the r.in.tiff procedure all seems
to go well but at the end of the operation the erro message of "segmentation
fault" occurs. We are stumped and befuddled (several months into this problem).
We do not know if the r.in.tiff utility as constructed fromt the GRASS 4.1
bundle is at fault or what. HELP!
May thanks in advance.

For what it's worth:
After having had trouble with the r.in.sunrast method of import, we
changed over to r.in.tiff and haven't had any trouble since. Perhaps you
should try the reverse:
- use `xv' to convert the tiff file to sunraster format
- use r.in.sunrast to import
This method worked at our site about half of the time, perhaps you'll
have better luck...
