copying coverages to tape

Here is one way to do it:

First, change directory "cd" to $LOCATION,

then issue <tar cvf tarfile */filename> where tarfile is either the file
_or_ device where you want to temporarily store the one file, and filename
is the name of your map.

When transfering more than one map, or type (vector & raster) , I create
a new mapset, (called "transfer" or "travel"), then 'g.copy' the maps
layers required into it, and then 'tar' the entire mapset.

If we need to set up a new LOCATION somewhere to do some work, I also 'tar'
the PERMENANT mapset (ours is empty except for the prerequisite default
files) along with the 'travel'ing mapset.

Hope this helps
