I'm familiar with `alien'. It is not always good at converting arbitrary
packages, but if the packages are built with compatibility in mind, they
should cross over OK. You can build debs with alien as well as import,
so perhaps there is no immediate need to develop separate deb packages.

I agree.
We test .rpm on Debian potato based system. So we know that they work.
