I ran this whole process through ascii files so I could keep tabs on what's happening. My ascii file looks good. I created an ascii file in the dig_att directory. It had one line, correct format, with x,y coordinates right in the middle of my polygon.> I have compared the ascii files to ascii files from the GRASS sample data set, e.g. the quad boundaries, that do go from ascii to vector, to raster, and they SEEM to be the same. Why won't v.support recognize my area label?

Possibly because your polygon is not an area. Use v.digit, digitizer none,
to change line type from a line to an area (in edit). This should allow
your area to be recognized.
