elf(3E) libraries? compile problem

When trying to compile GRASS under Solaris 2.5.1 for Intel with gcc 2.72
I get a loader error:

ld: fatal: file /export/home/prog/grass/src/libes/LIB/libgis.a: unknown
type,
  unable to process using elf(3E) libraries

This message occurs when trying to load/link several grass libraries (e.g.,
VECTLIB, GISLIB etc.)

Any idea how to fix this?
