Fred, A trick I use to get labels on things from dig_att files is to
copy the file in dig_att to site_lists directory (using awk as
described below to get it into proper sites format (eg.,
E|N|contour_label) then when I paint the file I tell it I want to
paint that new sites file and the when it asks if I want the site
labels as well, I say yes. I do this instead of making real label
files most the time because label files have a lot of stuff in them.
So here's the awk step I mentioned to make the sites file:
awk '{print S2"|"S3"|"S4}' SLOCATION/dig_att/contour_filename >
SLOCATION/site_lists/contour_labels
Okay, so their not the prettiest labels GRASS can make, but they're
adequate for most things.

As you may have noticed, r.contour attaches attributes to the new vector map;
these are stored under SLOCATION/dig_att, so you have a file with the locations
of the labels. If you're prepared to spend some time on writing a script, you
could transfer these locations to a SLOCATION/paint/label file that you can
display with d.paint.labels. Hope this helps.
