I'm copying this to the developer list at Markus' request.

Michael,
good to know you back!
Just a quick comment: this message would be useful on the list
as well. It's always a pity if only fractions of important
comments reach the list, hard to get the full picture /even
if one wants to gather old discussion.
Maybe you want to "publish" this message to grass-dev?
thanks
Markus
PS: for i.ortho.photo also the DEM elevation needs to be
extracted when collecting GCPs: so x,y,z instead of x,y

done for this. Glynn Clements outlined it in detail to the list, with copies
to me. It should postdate my initial post on committing the georectifier to
the CVS. Your help would be much appreciated. But need to coordinate with
Glynn.>

interactive x11 question/response as the basis for the GRASS GUI was made
several months back. This is the only way to make significant improvements
to the user interface.I am aiming toward as much of an x11-less GUI as possible for 6.2, using
TclTk. The current TclTk GUI is nearly x11-free. Georectification (almost
done) and digitizing (not done) are the only remaining major functions to
still require x11 interactive displays. The major question now involves replacing TclTk as the basis for the future
GRASS GUI. The 2 strongest contenders are Python interfaces to GTK and
wxWidgets. WxWidgets seems to have the best cross-platform support, while
GTK is somewhat more mature and reported to be a bit easier to work with. I
and a couple other folks are trying to do a test wxPython (Python extended
to use wxWidgets) GUI to see if it runs equally well on all supported GRASS
platforms. The new GUI platform would be the basis for GRASS after 6.2. In any case, we
need to move away from the now-archaic x11 display and interactive interface
system. My understanding is that this will not be dropped for now (i.e.,
XDRIVER will continue to exist), but GUI development will no longer depend
on x11 displays or x11 interactive interfaces.IMPORTANT NOTE: This does NOT mean lack of a command line interface (CLI),
GRASS command access, or the ability to extend GRASS through shell scripting
(or any other kind of scripting), only that the CLI and GUI will not REQUIRE
displays or interaction in an x11 terminal.Michael
