Does anyone know when version 2.8 is likely to be released? I noticed a few emails on the list last month about a release but the discussion seems to have gone quiet.. any info about this would be much appreciated.

The discussions may have fallen silent but the commits have not. Especially those from Simon. We (with him doing the lion’s share) have been updating docs and essentially getting all the ducks in a row. I expect it to be released in the very near future.
Likely late this month or early next.
