You can now download and test the first release candidate of GeoNetwork opensource version 3.0.0 (v3.0.0RC0) from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/geonetwork/files/GeoNetwork_unstable_development_versions/3.0.0RC0/ (a WAR and a multiplatform installer are provided).
You can find a list of new functionality in v3.0.0 at https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geonetwork/wiki/Geonetwork-Change-Proposals#300-release.
If you have any improvements you want to contribute back, the best is to use git to get a local copy of the source code, apply the fix and put out a Pull request so your improvements can be integrated quickly. Otherwise you can also create new Tickets in the issue tracker:

If you want to improve translations, do not hesitate to join a translation team on Transifex. It is really easy to register and to edit the translations:
