I've ported and tested the changes described in the proposal to/with 2.6.0 and 2.7.x and made some small changes (mainly for updated lucene and to distinguish between queries generated by geonetwork (guiservices) and queries actually specified by the user). By agreement with Nicolas and Francois, I will commit it to trunk. I will also provide a section in the sysconfig page to turn it on/off and config it.

One interesting suggested capability on this line would be to log the actual query as posed and to collect the number of hits found in relation to that query. Such information is a useful forensic tool to help tune search - examine those 'null searches'.
