Thanks Richard.
The terms of use indicate that Nasa require that they be provided a credit as
the owners of the Blue Marble imagery.
I've had a dig around the Geoserver website hoping to find similar
information about the country boundary dataset, although it doesn't appear
that this dataset is supplied by the Geoserver community - please correct me
if I'm wrong.

Can anyone provide the origins of the Blue Marble world image and
country boundary datasets shipped with GeoNetwork? We are considering
using these layers in an Internet facing installation of GeoNetwork and
as such we wish to make sure we're not going to infringe any copyright
restrictions associated with the datasets. Are the datasets covered by
the GeoNetwork licensing arrangements (appears to be both CCL and GNU-GPL)?
The Blue Earth images in web/geoserver/data/coverages/BlueMarble_world
come from NASA Visible Earth data, in particular:
"July, Blue Marble Next Generation w/ Topography and Bathymetry"
http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_rec.php?id=7106
Click on "Terms of Use".
Some instructions that may (?) in part have been followed to load
the data into the GeoServer distribution included with GN
(or that might be useful for further customization):
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/Load+NASA+Blue+Marble+Data
The particular image included in GN
seems to be a 1/100th scaling down of one of
the original NASA images.
