[Geonetwork-devel] Exporting metadata (& thumbnails, data or document, logo) ?

Hi Francois,

I would expect that all thumbnails, data or documents would be available via
a URL to either a web server or a web service. Harvesting all this
information would create duplication and could cause data integrity problems.
To prevent these problems the original metadata should use full URLs in the
hypertext links to these items. It would be *very* wrong to rely on
GeoNetwork to harvest this information when it should be available via a
hypertext link to the original data.

Thanks.

John

Hi list, one question on how to export metadata ... We can export metadata
using the xml view of GeoNetwork.

Is there any specification regarding exporting metadata + thumbnails (eg.
ArcCatalog encode thumbnails into the xml file) + data for download +
optionnaly documents (pdf, ...) + logo from source site ? We could have an
exporting process creating a zip file with all this information to be
completely harvested by a remote site ...

Any ideas on that point ?

Regards. Francois

Hi John,
I fully agree when talking about data and services available from nodes that are well established on the Internet.
However, there are many cases were this is not so. When deploying a node in Africa for instance, e.g. during an emergency or simply in low bandwidth connected locations it can make a lot of sense to be able to harvest and/or extract the full metadata and data so it can be moved into a "mother" node that is well connected. This is actually quite common in our domain.
Cheers,
Jeroen
