[GeoNetwork-devel] Geonetwork and Openlayers/Mapfish?

Openlayers developers,
LISAsoft has been hired to improved the User Interface for Geonetwork and we will be kicking off the project tomorrow.

Jeroen tells me that Camp2Camp has already been looking into building a GUI for Geonetwork. Is this true?
If so, what is the state of this Camp2Camp work? Where are you up to? Do you have anything that we can contribute to or build upon?

Hi Cameron,

Indeed It is true that we had a look on it. We integrated Openlayers in Geonetwork in order to perform geographical search, defining bbox criteria using Openlayers. We also looked into the georss search in Geonetwork, displaying results in Openlayers.
For specific needs, we implemented Openlayers as WMS viewer in Geosource (GeoNetwork including profil for France).

Openlayers, at this time, does not provide Intermap advanced functionnality such as PDF printing, web map context and map annotations, this is a current limitation.

Concerning Mapfish, there is no plan to integrate it as a GUI for Geonetwork but interaction between both will probably be developed in the coming month.

Cheers,

Mathieu

Thank you Mathieu for responding.
Where is the functionality that you are describing?
Is it in the Geonetwork svn, or maybe Openlayers svn?

Hi Cameron,
It is neither in OpenLayers svn nor in GeoNetwork svn. :frowning:

Maybe François-Xavier you have any idea about how to make this code available?

Hi Cameron,

As said by Mathieu, I worked on prototyping integration of Openlayers
into GeoNetwork one year ago when Intermap was not yet really embed into
the catalogue ... making some change into GeoNetwork and the georss
layer in Openlayers in order to display bounding box georss feeds (with
a symbol proportional to the number of results on the upper corner). For
GeoNetwork, I should be able to provide the code, but GeoNetwork was a
2.1 alpha version last year ... For OpenLayers the patch has been
submitted to the trac.

See this thread from the mailing list:
http://www.nabble.com/geonetwork-beta-and-openlayers-tt9868332.html#a9868332
(demonstration website is still alive).

Concerning migrating from an Intermap to an Openlayers webmap interface,
this will require more works and analysis I guess. Intermap is now
providing advanced functionnalities (Pdf map, WMC support, Email map,
Annotation, ...). All these are not available in Openlayers and not or
partial in MapFish (at least for the time being).

I don't really know how far you have to go in the webmap interface for
your project? If you have to only set up the bounding box parameter
using OpenLayers, this is easy. If you need to have the same level of
functionnalities than in Intermap ... more work required.

Maybe in this discussion, we should decide if we should plan for
migration of Intermap? For which release? Which resources are
available ?

Ciao. Francois

We have been hired to improve the User Interface for entering a Metadata record.
In particular, the metadata record needs to be presented in a user centric order, rather than in the order presented by the schema, as is the case as the moment with Geonetwork.

So it seems that the Openlayers functionality described doesn't cover much of what we need.

However, I suggest that you copy the Openlayers code into the Geonetwork sandbox which is about to be set up.
