[GeoNetwork-devel] geonetwork / CMS (Jeroen Ticheler)

Hello folks,

Well, I know that Geonetwork has been implemented with Java technologies but maybe Java CMS’s are not so good as the other ones available.
Joomla, Zope/Plone, Xoops and other ones are most popular and might be a good possibility for CMS. Joomla has a very well documented API.
It’s just a suggestion to look for others CMS.
Thanks,

Sorry for the picking this thread up a bit late. I'm catching up here.

Felipe is correct in pointing out that there are certainly other mature,
highly-functional CMSs into which one could incorporate Geonetwork.
However, almost all of them have different APIs, so each port of
Geonetwork would necessarily have to be done on a one-at-a-time basis.
Well, if you're really careful, you might be able to use the same
version for Joomla and Mambo, but I don't believe any of the other
popular CMSs have identical interfaces for their modules.

The advantage of using portlet technology (which will surely become more
mature as developments advance) is that it removes the system and
platform dependence from the implementation. Because of that
interoperability, a portlet interface to Geonetwork would allow users to
incorporate its functionality into _any_ CMS which supports the
(JSR168/JSR268) specification. That, it seems to me, is a distinct
advantage to the approach.

Hi Archie,

I tend to agree with what you say (although the other CMS's are more mature for sure, reason why the GN Community site is using Plone  ). The choice probably depends most on how quick a sufficiently capable CMS should be integrated. For the project it makes most sense to work with a Java based CMS (portlets) that evolves while GN 3 evolves.

That work can probably only be taken up seriously when GN 3 development starts. Starting the GN 3 requirements and design is something that is starting /should start now I think. I've started collecting requirements for GN 3 and I invite others to also provide requirements you think of.

Ciao,
Jeroen
