#181: Wrong help definition for Date Stamp

The definition of the Date Stamp says that it is the "Date that the
metadata was created (YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss)"
However it looks more like the date when the metadata was last updated. Is
it right? Then I guess it would be good to update the help.
Thanks

GeoNetwork opensource is a standards based, Free and Open Source catalog application to manage spatially referenced resources through the web. It provides powerful metadata editing and search functions as well as an embedded interactive web map viewer. This website contains information related to the development of the software.
The ISO specs indicate date created. The North America Profile says date updates. Of course, the date of last update is far more useful to know (use for harvesting), while keeping a fixed create date is not useful, and misleading after any update (Unless one follows a procedure where any update means creating a new record--issue new identifier. Imagine what this would do to the proliferation of duplicate records in a harvesting system...). So do you want to be 'by the book' correct, or provide some useful information?

HI Steve,
This issue is being addressed during the review of ISO 19115. I suggest that the actual dateStamp definition be used i.e.. "Date the metadata was created" so that if another metadata element is added for the changed date then there is no need to make changes to the dateStamp content.
Thanks.
John

Wouldn't it make more sense to change the scope notes on dataStamp to be the date of most recent update? That's what is needed for an operational system.
Can anyone suggest a use case for which the date of creation would be needed instead of the date of most recent update for a metadata record (that doesn't have to do with internal data management for the metadata producer)?
I guess this is a comment that should go into the ISO19115 review process?

+1
Can anyone suggest a use case for which the date of creation would be
needed instead of the date of most recent update for a metadata record
(that doesn't have to do with internal data management for the metadata
producer)?
I also don't see a rationale for an original metadata date. The concept of dateLastModified is very practical in harvesting and search operations. If it is never changed, then it is the original date. The date of the resource being published is also valuable (as a different parameter) to the publication and citation process.
I guess this is a comment that should go into the ISO19115 review process?
