[GeoNetwork-devel] GeoNetwork opensource user manual

Folks:

I am writing to inform you that the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has chosen GeoNetwork opensource software as our Spatial Data Catalogue of choice. We are currently making changes to the look and feel of the software to suit our needs.

I have been tasked with providing training material as well all encompassing documentation to reflect our customized version of GeoNetwork. I have read the Licence information on your website (http://geonetwork-opensource.org/stable/users/preface.html#author-information), specifically Documentation, and understand I require permission from the copyright holder.

I would like to know what process I am required to follow to get a (downloadable) copy of the existing version 2.6 user manual, which can be changed to reflect our customization. Is there a process I need to follow to get permission from the copyright holder to make changes? As open source material, are there any legal issues that I should be aware of?

This is a time sensitive matter and would appreciate your attention as soon as possible.

Thanking you in advance,

Rob Gilbert

Dear Rob,
I’m glad to hear you’ve chosen GeoNetwork! The documentation is indeed released under a CC license.

The developer team is contributing to this documentation and I would therefor like to ask you to refer to the GeoNetwork developer team when you use the documentation.

Best would be if you would decide to contribute to the project any generic improvements you make. We have a serious lack of people actively contributing to the documentation (fully acknowledging the work from those that actually do contribute!!). You can then also safely generate the documentation using screenshots of your own instance of the software for instance.

I personally have no problems with an agency rebuilding the documentation with altered graphics as long as the attributions to the project remain intact. I will however also start a discussion with the team about this topic. We want to prevent someone running away with all the work done by the community and not attributing the community in anyway as you will understand. The current “No Derivative Works” is too strict for that purpose.

I’m not sure this helps you much at this point in time. A follow up discussion would be great.

Kind regards,
Jeroen
