[GeoNetwork-devel] GeoServer version update

Hi developers,
The currently shipped version of GeoServer in GeoNetwork is outdated. The pom.xml says it is version 2.1.1 (which is really old by now). Is there a good reason NOT to upgrade to the latest version 2.4.2 in our automated build scripts?
Thanks,
Jeroen

Hi

The main issue for me was that I have no clear the procedure to update the geoserver. GeoServer is stored in the maven_repo module as a maven artifact and requires some additional stuff of maven files, not just put the new geoserver.war.

Most probably is due to my ignorance about how to manage this, but anyway would be nice to have some documentation about the maven_repo project, related to add new artifacts or update the maven artifacts in that module.

Regards,
Jose García

I believe that we could use the opengeo maven repository to resolve the geoserver artifacts instead of the ones in maven_repo. I don’t see an real reason for keeping the geoserver files in the repo except in the case that the opengeo repo goes away. Until that time we can probably use the artifacts in the opengeo repo.

It will take some time to evaluate what effect that will have though. The build might have to be changed slightly.

Hi Jesse

I have take a quick look to http://repo.opengeo.org/ and I think if we use it we’ll need to build the geoserver war file (at least didn’t find an artifact for it).

I guess actual approach with maven_repo should be fine, the only stuff for me is the lack of documentation about how to manage updates or new artifacts. I’m checking some documentation about this and want to manage some tests.

In some moment would be nice to check about having an online repository for GeoNetwork and all the dependencies, so no need of the maven_repo.

Hi

The version of GeoServer is updated to version 2.4.2 in develop branch. Not sure if want also to upgrade the version for 2.10 branch?

I added in https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geoserver the steps to upgrade to newer versions of GeoServer, so are more clear the steps.

Hi all,
can I share 2 cents about this topic?

I see form Jose instructions that you're building a GeoServer with some
extensions, a custom one, if you will.
We do this all the time, and the "suggested" way to do so is to:
* take the web/app contents, which are really just little more than a
web.xml and a pom file (there is no java)
* make it your own module, customize the pom file to drop whatever you
don't need, and add whatever you
  need instead
* build this new module, it will generate a GeoServer that satisfy your
needs, and should work off the existing repos without
a need to deploy manually war files and the like

Hope this helps

Cheers

Well, yes, in theory, you should be able to update the GeoServer by just
changing the version number in the pom file of that
module (which can be centralized in a property).
It has it own downsides though, the build gets slower because it has to
assemble the .war from the various jars available
in the maven repo.

Hi Andrea

I guess should be not a big issue, as we need to build geoserver module only when creating the installer. For development no need to build it.
