[GeoNetwork-devel] Integrating Google Earth and GeoNetwork'sinteractive mapping interface. [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Hi Francois,

Thanks for this information. It certainly seems a possible alternative and
most likely the probable solution.

I hope you are going to keep this list up to date with the developments of
Google Earth providing openlayers for the satellite layer? ;--)

Thanks.

John

Hi John, I don't know if there are plans to put googleearth
background map
on the intermap component ... anyway another option could be to use
openlayers instead.
On basic demo of the integration of openlayers into
GeoNetwork is available
here (basic functionality only):

Here is openlayers in action with google earth.

Hi All,

Has anyone tried to integrate Google earth with GeoNetwork's
interactive map
interface? We are getting a lot of people in our
organisation saying how
fantastic Google Earth is. I think it's because they can see
an image of
their own house on the internet using the satellite imagery
that Google
Earth
uses. Hence people want to see that stuff as a back drop in
the interactive
mapping interface.

Personally I think it is a bit too much of the "shiny objects
syndrome" but
we can't afford to buy the satellite imagery and people keep
on asking for
Google Earth functionality. Hence the question about using
the Google Earth
satellite imagery as a back drop in the interactive mapping
interface? I
know we will have to pay Google Earth for using it but it is probably
cheaper
than buying the satellite imagery.

Thanks.

Hi all,

Jeroen, I don't really know how you plan to integrate openlayer into
intermap, but I've also noticed that mapbuilder has done such a thing also
for the renderer :
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/mapbuilder-lib-1.5-alpha1 ...

Simone, Integrating openlayers into GeoNetwork, is not so difficult (I've
already provided some zip package to Jorge off-list), but the package is
based on beta1 (quite different with beta4) ... Maybe, if everybody agree we
could provide a package once the 2.1 is released ... but for the time being,
openlayers is only used to help browsing through metadata (to display bbox)
but not really to browse on data as intermap. Some features to deal with
georss layer has been added to openlayers
http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/721

Maybe a better way to go, could be to provide a catalog interface component
to openlayers in order to people to add catalog in their website easily ...
more a portlet | google widget approach than to update all xsl interface of
GeoNetwork to plug that into an existing website ...

Ciao.

Francois
