[GeoNetwork-devel] ISO Adoption Aids on the Web [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Ted,

I had a look at the presentations and I liked them. I wasn't going to answer
your email because your question was about what technologies to use for this
type presentation on the web. However, now that Jeroen has set the standard
I do have the following question about your work:

Why you would want to create yet another metadata standard for geoscientific
stuff when you can use ISO 19115 and if necessary extend it to suit the
special geoscientific fields?

Thanks.

John

Dear Ted,
Thanks for those interesting presentations! Cool to watch them play
while relaxing from the keyboard, and I learned many new things too!
I took the freedom to put the link up on the Links section in the
geonetwork-opensource.org Links section. I hope that is OK with you?

I ran into the following:

Presentation 1 - "Standard Metadata in Scientific Data Formats":
- Slide 7 went on just to long for my distracted mind and so I lost
my on that slide I realized.
- Slide 8 blocked, I didn't manage to play it. The browser
complained
about a missing file, although I don't think if that's the actual
cause since it is also missing in the other presentations: /dmc/docs/
metadata/player/art_plugins.xml was not found
- I wasn't very clear on the content of a SIP compared to an AIP at
the end of the presentation

Presentation 2 - "References, People and Metadata":

Slide 4: We use UUID identifiers in the MD_Identifier field.
Unfortunately I haven;t seen this widely adopted yet, although it
seems to be suggested in the (still draft) Implementation Rules for
Metadata of the European INSPIRE Directive.
Slide 4: We extensively use CI_OnlineResource objects as part of the
Distribution Information object. I consider that one of the very
interesting aspects of ISO19115 too, next to the others you mentioned.
Slide 10: ResponsiblePartys seems funny spelling to me  I can see
where it comes from but maybe it makes sense to use Responsible
Parties in the title?

Presentation 3 - "":
Slide 8: UUID mentioned in full, but no specifics in slide. A cross
reference could also be made between this slide and the slide in
presentation 2?
In Slide 10 at the end you give a number of interesting uses
but they
are not reflected in the slide. It was actually the type of
information I was missing at first when you started listing the
Quality objects. I stared wondering how these would be used/ useful
and then you gave uses. It could be worth splitting those out in a
separate slide before going to the conclusion.

Presentation 4 "":
Slide 6 could do with a 1 line example (beyond the
imagination of the
viewer looking at the balloon  )

The overlap between presentation 3 and 4 could possibly be reduced a
bit?

A presentation explaining how the ISO standard is structured
would be
a great added value too! Seems like a natural evolution of your
presentations 3 and 4.

All in all, great interactive presentations!!
Ciao,
Jeroen

John,

I am sorry that you got that impression. I am 1000% against creating another
standard and will need to take another look at the first presentation to
make sure that is clear.

The situation I have is that at the Data Center we have a bunch of FGDC /
ISO metadata that is thought of as a completely different resource than the
files being written in scientific formats, like netCDF or HDF. My goal is to
connect those metadata to these files. We actually do it using a stylesheet
to translate from FGDC XML to ncML, the netCDF XML representation. This is
also a bridge between what we think of as collection level and granule level
metadata. Traditionally, the collection level metadata has been in FGDC (or
maybe DIF) and the granule level metadata has been in file headers. I am
trying to begin to go across that gap.

Actually, ISO crosses that gap in many interesting ways as I'm sure you
know. We are working at NGDC to get the most out of ISO 19115 without any
extensions and I think we have a long way to go along a very interesting and
powerful path. These presentations are an attempt to enlist others in the
quest to find interesting things to do with ISO.

I agree we definitely do not need more standards! We need to learn to use
the existing ones effectively.
