[GeoNetwork-devel] metadata in multiple languages with unified identifier

We have requirements to publish metadata in English and French.

Using svn trunk, does GN allow for publishing an English metadata record
and French metadata record while assigning it to a single id? Or is
each metadata record an independent entry.

Our use case is having a logical associate between a metadata entry
offered in various language profiles.

Thanks

Multilingual metadata editing is defined in iso19139. You don’t have to make one record for each languages. Using iso19139, you could translate only some gco:CharacterString elements (eg. gmd:title and gmd:keywords). We made most of the work in geocat.ch sandbox.

When creating multilingual metadata editing, some other questions have to be taken into account:

  • which language to display in metadata viewing ?
  • how to index ? and search ?

Basically, in geocat.ch sandbox, we choose to view metadata content in GUI language if available. If not, in default metadata language (ie. gmd:language). One index by languages is created and when searching GUI language is boost for results to be on top of the list.

See proposal for details:

More works needed to merge this to trunk (not sure how much works is required due to editor Ajax changes). I have to chech that and keep you and the list up to date.

Cheers. Francois

That's great news. We are aware of the ISO support in a single
document, but wondered whether this would be available in the GN
metadata GUI.

Do you have a timeline on when this will make it into the codebase?

Cheers. Francois
