[GeoNetwork-devel] Metadata title

Hi Folks,
Further to my ticket http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/ticket/281 and the comment at the end suggesting I raise the issue here on the dev list - I think from a user-perspective that the "title" attribute should be blank. At present it's populated with the title of the template that it was created from. Personally I just think its bad UI to have it pre-populated from the template.
(Note - I appreciate that metadata and templates are treated as being essentially the same by GeoNetwork, but think some special exceptions should be made, such as this).
Does anyone else have any thoughts/feelings on this?
Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan

For me the best solution (not for 2.6.0 as should be released early) is:

  1. When creating a template in the metadata editor and click to save it, GeoNetwork should ask to the user for a title for the template (independent of metadata title field). This title should be stored in the database (not as part of metadata xml) and be used to display the templates list titles when creating a new metadata.

When creating a new metadata from a template, should work as actual showing the default values for the fields filled in the template. But as the template title is managed independent as metadata title field, the user can leave empty the last one.

  1. Same when importing a template from xml file, GeoNetwork should ask for a title for the template.

  2. Add a form to maintain template titles (maybe in actual form to reorder templates changing a bit to allow edit the titles also)

Not sure if more places need changes.

Regards,
Jose Garcia

Jose,

This would be ideal for my users, who are already commenting on the
issue exactly as per 281.

Justin.

I don’t have a user-base yet so I haven’t been able to make such a claim. It just seems to me that from a user perspective quite a few folks are probably not going to realise they need to change it.

As to Jose’s suggestions that looks pretty good, though it might be unwieldy if a user has many templates to import. Would there not be a way to include template title in the export?
