I added a new index of "how to" documents
on the Trac site - there's a link to it
on the front page. This index automatically
lists all pages that have a name
beginning with "HowTo".
I created two "how to" documents:
1. Building GN without using the installer.
2. Running GN under Tomcat.

Nice touch and good idea, although it might be wise to run the idea past Jeroen and make sure we fit in with his master documentation plan.

Hi Richard and Cameron,
Thanks! I think this is a much needed improvement that I didn't get to and I probably lack the organized mindset for

Hi All,
I've started working with GeoNetwork recently and could have used that HowTo last week, and I ended up setting up GN on tomcat slightly differently ( by using a context file in conf/Catalina/localhost) which I will add to the wiki as an alternative .
I did run into another problems that could use a HowTo:
- initialization of McKoi DB passwords: trying various things kept resulting in a McKoi "db.conf file not found error" even though the file was there. I got it to work by copying the WEB-INF/config.xml file from GN installed by the installer into the tomcat instance and it worked. Is there info on that anywhere?
Cheers,

Um, that's a bit too vague; you'll have to be more explicit
about what you did. In particular, if you had copied the
subdirectories of the web directory into your Tomcat webapps
directory -- as per the "how to" -- you would certainly
have the two WEB-INF/config.xml files in the right places.

Hi Mike!
I _think_ this is because the db.conf file that the installer generated contains the proper username and password for the McKoi Db you were trying to use. The DB is created and filled during the installation process and a username and password are then generated. A fresh SVN copy thus has no DB ready to go.
Ciao,
Jeroen

The "how to" for compiling GN already includes
a step to run GAST to initialize the database;
for good measure, I have now added an explicit reminder
to do that to the Tomcat "how to".

Indeed it looks like running GAST to init the DB is the step I was missing. It appears that both the installer and GAST are used to set the McKoi DB passwords. In any case I have it working with Postgres now but that is still useful to know.
And yes I omitted that the intermap application also needs an equivalent context XML document to set up for tomcat in the way I described (geoserver too if needed). Sorry about that but I see that's already been added to the wiki. On a windows system, having spaces in the path name for docBase works fine with this method.
Cheers,
Mike

One thing I haven't found yet is how to get a list of all the metadata records owned by a particular user, or that belong to a certain group. Does such a page exist in GN?
Mike
Hi Mike,
You can filter on groups, but not on a user indeed. Actually I think there's a problem even with the filtering on groups at the moment (not sure I'm right here).

Yep - there was a problem there - I have a fix for that in the BlueNet stuff I need to apply.
