[GeoNetwork-devel] Newbie introduction and map search problems

Dear all,

I’m new to this mailing list so I’d like to introduce our activities first. We have been testing Geonetwork to use it as a service and product catalog in various projects we are working on.

Our immediate plan is to use it to develop the Marcoast Service Portal. Marcoast (Marine & Coastal Environmental Information Services) is a three year GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) project funded by the European Space Agency with the aim of establishing a durable network of marine and coastal information services. Marcoast project started in November 2005 (more info on www.gmes-marcoast.com)

However, we’d also like to use it in the future on other projects we are working on, and of course we’d like to contribute back to the community any improvements that we might make.

Anyway, we’d like to integrate the map search feature that is used in the fao geonetwork portals (possibly using a different WMS) but we’ve had some problems integrating it. We’ve searched through the list archives, but we haven’t been able to solve our problems.

We have copied (and sometimes slightly modified) the javascript code from the fao portal, but we can’t get it to work with the different geonetwork versions that we’ve tried. From some e-mails I’ve seen in the list, it seems that searching using the criteria such as "&westBL=...&eastBL=.&southBL=.&northBL=." doesn’t work in version 2.0.2. Therefore we’ve tried to do this kind of search on different versions but we can’t get it to work:

- Version 2.0.0 downloaded from the CVS and built -> After solving some errors at build time, we’ve been able to compile and run this version, but this search doesn’t work.
- Version 2.0.0 desktop release (precompiled version) doesn’t work either.

Do you know what release should we use to make the geographic search work?

On a side note, we are interested in adding a more detailed category browsing capability to geonetwork, possibly using some kind of service ontology stored on a “Knowledgebase server”. We are still thinking on the right approach, but I’d be interested in hearing your comments about how this could be done, or if you are planning this kind of feature in a future release.

Best regards,

Oriol

Indeed, this required a small change that was added to the CVS after the 2.0.2 release. It will be available in the 2.0.3 release that we will create on Monday.
There are some screen mock ups on the http://geonetwork-opensource.org community website (look under images) that include the same thing. It could be based on a small InterMap based (the integrated map viewer) viewer that provides a transparent switch from search to full blown interactive map interface. the FAO solution is based on QuickWMS and does indeed rely on a WMS server.

You have to check out the 2_0_FIX2 branch (silly name, sorry for that  )

Also the 2.1 code (in the HEAD) contains the code, but that version is far from stable and will only see a first alpha release next week.

Yes, Francois and Pierre in France are working on integrating thesaurus support to both version 2.0 and later ported into 2.1 . That should allow to do a solid category browsing option. We will also be working on an improved searching using keywords. Not completely sure what that will look like, but it should inform the user on related keywords to his initial search results and help refine his search. If you have a good solution, input is welcome.

Ciao,
Jeroen

Best regards,

Oriol
