This is a longer-range proposal, but Doug Nebert has noted the
desirability of implementing some sort of term expansion function for
the existing thesaurus capability in GeoNetwork. We built such a
capability for the Isearch search engine in Isite, in fact, which
allowed for both term expansion (that is, expand a search term into a
list of synonyms) and term contraction (ie, convert a search term into a
standard vocabulary term before searching). Both of these functions
would be useful for end users who may not be aware of precise terminology.
How this capability would be requested via CSW is currently an
unresolved question.

I'm not expecting this to take place in the first wave of developments
we propose. Doug is interested in it and we'll have to see how the
other work goes first, I expect. I'll provide details whenever we get
to the actual point of discussing implementation, but for now I just
wanted to lay the groundwork for some discussion.
