Perhaps my concern is only theoretical, as no XSLT
transformer rejects (or will ever reject) a stylesheet
with conflicting definitions of the same template?

It's a bit tedious/ugly but I kind of like it
Moving to saxon is an improvement in that you do get warnings about conflicting template definitions - which is good especially in the iso19139 xsls where there were a few conflicts that were dependent on ordering/wrong.
