[GeoNetwork-devel] Release date for Geonetwork 2.8

Geonetwork v2.8.0RC2 was release on Oct 24. Based on the release dates of RC
I was expecting the final release to have been done by now.

I also noticed that there is not much activity on the 2.8 branch at this
time.

Would it be possible to list tasks remaining to get a final 2.8.0 release. I
(and possibly others) may be able to help with some of these task.

Thank you.

Hi Ian

I wanted to discuss with the other developers yesterday in IRC, but finally could not connect.

Let’s check here as if no blocking issues I think should be released 2.8.0 this week.

I remember time ago Simon commented about some issues that should be solved before final release, but not sure if already solved. If anyone has any issue that should be solved before final release please provide feedback about this.

Regards,
Jose García

Hi Jose,

All the issues I raised have since been committed or otherwise dealt with. One that I wish we could commit to 2.8.0 now is Jesse's patch to fix the problem with Lucene using up all the open file descriptors over a period of time. But Jesse's patch needed to be much more extensive and complex than the one I developed to fix the same problem in 2.6.x (the one I developed is in the as yet unreleased 2.6.5) because of the multilingual indexing in 2.8.x.

Any thoughts on this Jesse? (I haven't had time to review your patch fully mainly because it requires that I spend some time with some parts of Lucene - however there are now many more integration tests thanks to your efforts!).

Cheers,
Simon

My patch has been stable and good and if we want we can probably apply it to the 2.8 branch. It has been used in Geocat.ch for about 2 weeks, not production yet but the test server and has no issues. It is a fairly major change so it we want to use it for 2.8 we should merge it as one commit and test it well so that we can either keep it or revert it back easily if we decide it is causing problems.

However there is a problem with the patch and 2.9. The facetting work causes problems because it doesn’t support NRT indexing until lucene 4.1-SNAPSHOT. This means I have more work to do to either:

  1. Test 4.1-SNAPSHOT
  2. Revert some performance related improvements and not use NRT indexing.

Thanks Jesse.

Jose: IMO we should release 2.8.0 after we commit Jesse's patch to 2.8.x branch (2.9 facet search incompatibilities can wait I think) and test. Gives us a good opportunity to troll through the tickets from the 2.8.x RCs once more as part of that. To cap that process maybe we should agree a 2.8.0 release date. How about Monday Dec 17 for the release with all commits done by Dec 14? Does that suit everyone?

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Developers and Francois,

One ticket that needs finishing before the release is ticket #910.

Francois,

I think you fixed this on the trunk in this commit:

https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geonetwork/commit/b89243512b65ac5bbfc1bcd91de9dd95963a7437

but as far as I can tell its not committed to 2.8.x branch yet.

Will try over next 2 weeks to check out anything else that really need fixing.

Thanks,

Andrew
