[GeoNetwork-devel] Tightly coupled verses loosely coupled [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Hi All,

It has appeared to me from some of our attempts to load GeoNetwork and
different emails on this list that GeoNetwork seems to be getting tightly
coupled with InterMap and geoserver. I am concerned about this tight
coupling. I thought that the use of standards meant that the different
components could be loosely coupled so that each site could use whatever Web
Map Client or other OGC/TC211 compliant components that they preferred.

It seemed that version 2.0.X was more loosely coupled than version 2.1+. Is
this a step in the right direction? Will we be able to choose in the future?

I know that there needs to be some sort of passing of parameters from a WMC
to a search system but couldn't GN use standards to do this and then the XML
or HTML Post string be parsed as an input form variable according to the
standards and then pass that variable to get those parameters?

I look forward to a discussion on people's experiences and ideas on this.

Thanks.
