[GeoNetwork-devel] Versioning metadata record

Hi List,

I am trying to figure out how versioning of metadata can be achieved in
Geonetwork.
I need to be able to track all changes in the metadata. Is there anyway to
bring up the previous versions of records? Or even possibly to show the full
history of a record?

I'm super keen to hear the options out there.

Kind Regards,
Jacqui

hi Jacqueline,

there is no support for versioning in GeoNetwork. Maybe you could use the change Notification function to trigger a process that automatically updates the metadata in a versioning engine such as SVN or CVS, to achieve this ?

Also considering a conventional database solution by having a history table triggered from the Metadata table (as we have a need for this too) - could store 'diffs' between document versions - so probably kind of like svn but in the database. (Not really in love with databases just wondering that we already have to have one for GeoNetwork, might make sense (or maybe not!) to use it for this purpose too).

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Simon and Jacqueline,

This will also be handy when GeoNetwork is used as a Registry. According to ISO 19135 a history of the changes should be maintained.

Thanks.

John

Thanks for the responses all.

Really liking the ideas that have been put across on this email thread.
I was also thinking along the same lines of Heikki and Simon.
As Simon said,"probably kind of like svn but in the database"

There seems to be interest in the idea of versioning the metadata record
and its looks like it aligns well with the future direction of Geonetwork.

Thanks again for the comments and ideas.

Kind Regards,
Jacqui.
