Hi Francois,
many thanks for your feedback. Here are my answers:
Hi Andrea, some ideas ...
- How to manage multilingual metadata ? This will certainly be useful
for such initiative as INSPIRE in Europe as the commission will ask
member states to produce metadata ... How to deal with this in search,
edit, translation ... I know some projects which looked a bit into
that (http://www.idee.es/sdiger/). Is that a need for FAO also ?
This is a big issue, but for now we don't know how to address it.
# Maybe two solutions, have on metadata in each language or
# like in the skos format we used for thesaurus add a "lang" attribute on
each element we need to translate
# <topicCat lang="en">Blabla</topicCat><topicCat
lang="fr">BlablaFr</topicCat> ... That way you could translate only part of
the metadata which need to be translated ... Is there any comments on that
on the ISO standards ?
# ... Then link the user interface with a translation service
- following John Hockaday remark on the user interface design maybe we
could also work on how to get automatic metadata from the datasets ?
Query the WebMapservice to get the extent, the projection ..., the
WebFeatureService to get the structure, ... And in a local network,
grab information from a RASTER file ... using GeoTools ? Gdal ...
Good suggestion.
# I had a try with linking the GUI with a WMS service ... That's quite easy
with the Ajax we have on the client side now.
- Configuring geonetwork to use LDAP for users and groups ?
Yes, already planned. This feature has been asked by many users.
- Use of an XML Native DB (such as eXist or Xindice ...) ? This could
be useful to query XML doc and update some parts of the XML using a
Xquery language. Geonetwork is using Lucene to query metadata which is
really nice but in some way XML DB could make insert/update/basic
search of XML easier ... Some of those have an xlink support I guess
We were looking at some xml-dbmss. I didn't know about eXist so I had a look
at it and it seems to be the 'definitive' one: can manage milions of
metadata, supports XACML and has many interesting features. Thanks!!!
- cache XML ... Geonetwork is spending time to do XSL transformation
and maybe geonetwork is doing many time the same things ... Is there
any way to do XML cache for that ?
This is a good point. Are you having problems with performances? Beside the
first load of the home page, the speed seems reasonable.
# No I'm not, but it could certainly be better ... Cache could also be set
up at the webserver level anyway.
Francois
Cheers,
Andrea

Hi all,
as you know, we are designing geonetwork 3. The main issues here are
to understand the real needs of the users and to address these issues
we need some feedback from you.
The purpose of this email is to get your idea of your ideal
geonetwork. How it should designed, what features it should have and
so on. I would like to subdivide the requirements in 2 classes:
- those closely related to the metadata format itself (stuff like the
use of xlink
for contacts, use of metadata hierarchies, ISO services etc...)
- general requirements (features, user interface, modules, protocols)
While it is easy for us to address the second class we have some
problems with the first one. I would like to receive a lot of feedback
from you here, exspecially from those of you (like John Hockaday) who
have a deep understanding of the metadata formats like the ISO one.
The question is: how would you design your geonetwork to face your needs?
Many thanks in advance,
Andrea
