I have already successfully set up geonetwork on a test server but now wanted
to set it up on a production system. I started with a new server with the
Windows Server 2008 OS.
I installed the Java 1.5.0 using the jre-1_5_0_22-windows-amd64.exe file
from the java website.
When I try to run the geonetwork 2.6 install script it tells me that it
can't find Java 1.5.0.
I've tried the latest version of Java as well but with no more success
(jre-6u21-windows-x64). I added the java bin directory to the path but still
no luck.
Any suggestions?

Yes I tried that too. Just to check, should the path be set to the bin
directory i.e.
c:\program files\java\jre1.5.0_22\bin? and which exact directory should
JAVA_HOME be set to?

I discovered the problem. As I'm on a 64bit server I'd installed the 64bit
JRE. Obviously GeoNetwork needs the 32bit one, although it seems to run with
the latest version (1.6) ok. I just downloaded the exact version geonetwork
pointed me to and it works.

Weird, installing 32bit JRE allowed me to run the installer but then I had to
installed the 64bit JRE as well in order to run GAST???
It appears that neither need the environment flags set

Get in consideration that Windows set a java environment by
default. However I don't know the setting in a windows server
machine...... I use linux in my system.
Do you use GAST in a production environment??? In such case, is
better the you install the war file provided by geonetwork team in
your Tomcat installation..... read the
FOSS4G_Mastering_Advanced_GeoNetwork.pdf document. In this document
the developer show how to set a efficient production environment with
geonetwork.
You can download the document in the Geonetwork site.
