Greetings, I have added a couple of categories to geonetwork but they dont
see to work when I click to search for data using categories. Is there
anything I need to do besides simple adding a new category to make them
active?

Since it is not written down in this thread very clearly, here is the
solution to the problem once more:
The problem is, that GeoNetwork does not distinguish between variables and
languages and GUI in an obvious way.
So, if you create another category with the "Administration / Category
management" you must not use any special characters. Only a,b,c... and
understroke _ are allowed. There must not be any blanks! For example if you
would like a category "INSPIRE Annex I" you write "inspire_annex_i". Always
use lower case!
After that you use the menue "Administration / Localization". Change the
"Entity" to Categories and work your way through all of your categories.
Pick some source language. It is not important which one, because all of the
languages only know those words you picked in the menu "Administration /
Category management". Make sure you pick the right Target language, which in
my case is only German and English. Change all of the words from
"Administration / Localization" to correct spelling in this language. All of
the other languages use the 'labels' given in the "Category mangement".
After that you may chose one or even more of the created or changed
categories for each metadata.
If you still have problems in finding metadata by using the categories, log
in as admin. Goto the menu "Administration" and press the button "Rebuild"
for "Rebuild Lucene index". If this does not help. You may delete the
directories
/srv/tomcat/webapps/geonetwork/WEB-INF/lucene/nonspatial
/srv/tomcat/webapps/geonetwork/WEB-INF/lucene/spatial.
Restart Tomcat. After that again "Rebuild Lucene index". Now it should work.
