[sorry for that last email being sent half complete.]
I'm editing a metadata record in GeoNetwork (using one of the nightly
builds for 2.8.x.) For some reason, the creation date and publication
date are missing. When I try to add them in the default web interface (or
the new javascript interface), the values do not stay. It seems like it's
submitted but the record returns with those values still missing. This is
true with a few other fields, like dataset version under Distributor
Information. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Thanks.

Hi John,
It could be related to this issue:
http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/ticket/960
I found open for edit of existing metadata that had UTC
date_time with 'Z' were not recognised and they were altered.
Ian Wallen has provided a patch but I haven't tested it yet.
Perhaps you could try the patch as well.
Andrew

Thanks but the problem seems to be something else. I have a recent nightly
build with updated date/time files and the problem still arises.
I cannot edit various items in my metadata, more than just dates. It seems
to be any item that has gco:nilReason="missing" in the source XML file
before importing. Once imported, that field is blank and I cannot add
information. It always returns blank. As an example, one such entry has
the following, preventing me from adding Data Quality Units information.
Thanks.
<DQ_QuantitativeResult>
<valueUnit gco:nilReason="missing" />
<value>
<gco:Record>+/- 40 feet</gco:Record>
</value>
</DQ_QuantitativeResult>
