[GeoNetwork-users] edit harvested records // accessing full record from search result

Hi,
I have two questions - I run GeoNetwork from SVN trunk:
1. when harvesting OGC getCapabilities Documents, I sometimes wish to edit the generated metadata record. The service provider may not have filled out all fields with meaningful data - e.g. My Geoserver WMS.
How can I edit harvested metadata?

2. and a minor thing: How can I access the full metadata record from search result? This only seems to be able from 'Last results' page and not from default search results page? This is the link to a full record in my understanding: http://localhost:8080/geonetwork/srv/en/metadata.show?id=152&currTab=simple
I lack a link to that page, when matching records are displayed for a search.

Cheers
Sebastian

Maybe you should try to contact the webservice administrator and ask him
to configure the service properly  ... I'm not sure a lot of
administrator do that  ... but that a real need if you harvest OGC
services to produce metadata. Maybe an idea could be to make an "how-to
configure OGC services to be harvested by catalogues" but such things
are already on geoserver and mapserver website but maybe not really
adressing metadata harvesting ...

How can I edit harvested metadata?

For the time being, you can't because on the next run, the harvester
will overwrite your change. That's the default configuration of all
harvesters for now.

I will probably add an option to "detach" metadata harvested from an OGC
services in order to be able to edit but I really think that the work
has to be done at the OGC service configuration level rather than in the
catalogue.
Then we need to be able to update (rather than overwrite) the harvested
metadata ... that's becoming tricky ! If you've any suggestions there ?
How to create a unique identifier for a service and its layers ? Which
part of the metadata could be edited in the catalogue ? How to handle
removing/adding layers ?

We had such a link in search results on the metadata title in previous
version but has been removed then ... Usually I turn this link on which
is useful (you need to update xsl/search-result-xhtml.xsl for that I
guess.

Detach-option would be great, I think. mmmh.. maybe one could simply advance INsert XML metadata OGC getCapabilities option... Harvesting an OGC Service functionality seems to be more advanced than Inserting an getCapabilities document in Insert XML metadata, right? Layers are not read out in the latter case, which is I think a very convenient feature in the OGC harvester. If harvesting and inserting Capabilities were the same, one could use the inserting capabilities feature as the detached option.

Then we need to be able to update (rather than overwrite) the harvested
metadata ... that's becoming tricky ! If you've any suggestions there ?

Francois,
I don't think that think link was purposely removed. You could enable it again, make it open the record in the embedded form (just like the metadata button). Best to use the uuid instead of the id though.

By the way, we've always named that button "Metadata", which I would think does not mean much to the average visitor. Maybe the button should instead say "More information", "Read more", "More details" or something of that sort. Anyone opinions on this?

+1

That would be great! The term "metadata" does not need to be anywhere on the front-end interface. IMHO, it scares people away more than it attracts. The term is too much associated with technical jargon and not enough about its intended purpose. I probably wouldn't even use "details" in the description link since that is subjective and may be different to the user as it is to the metadata publisher. I'd rather see "More information...", "Read more.." or something that fits with current Web 2.0 trends and modern user experiences elsewhere on the web.

I have been managing a small Clearinghouse (United States, State of Delaware) for about 7 years or so. We started with ISite and moved to ESRI products, including GIS Portal Toolkit. I just left that group and plan to do something similar for my new organization, and GeoNetwork is what we'll be using. If I may add, a big *Thank You* to the GeoNetwork community and developers for releasing and managing this product. I would NOT be looking forward to working with GIS Portal Toolkit again!.
