Hi Geonetwork developers and users,
We have started to use the OGC WMS harvester of Geonetwork to harvest our Geoserver
WMS on a daily basis to provide metadata for the map services (see http://www.metoc.gov.au/geonetwork
and click on e.g 'RAN Expendable Bathythermograph Deployments'. This is a really excellent service for
us as it provides an automatic way of updating the metadata and the maps and. However one thing we feel is missing is a way to control which layers you want to publish from the WMS. At present you get all the layers back as metadata including some layers you may not wish to publish.
We therefore suggest add a search criteria to the OGC WMS harvester form. This would work so that
the user is presented with a list of layer names on the harvester form and then they could select which ones
they wanted to harvest.
Let us know your thoughts on this idea.
Andrew
HI Andrew,
That is indeed an excellent idea. I would like to see the WMS harvesting to work a little different also. I was thinking of a harvester where you would:
- Provide the WMS/WFS/WPS/WCS whatever service URL
- Generate a service metadata
- Have a list of available layers displayed in that service metadata with selection buttons (and maybe also delete buttons)
- Schedule a harvesting frequency straight from within the service metadata.
- The harvesting status and also service monitoring information could be displayed on the Service metadata page (what is visible depends on the user profile. Some info would be public while available layers which are not scheduled for harvesting could be hidden for guest users).
I would also like to see options that allow you to decide if and how new metadata from the server is integrated in to the local metadata already harvested. That could allow us to edit the records in the GN editor while still having some parts updated (driven) by the WMS server.
This would remove the Service harvesting from the harvesting interface (possibly) and would require a view that shows all service metadata that has (or could have) a harvesting schedule setup.
My 2 cents.
Ciao,
Jeroen

Thanks.
