[GeoNetwork-users] Error installing GN 2.1

Jeroen

Congratulations for the new release

I have downloaded and tried installing the "geonetwork-install-2.1.0(2)" but
am getting an error that "Cannot find Java 1.5.0 - 1.5.0_12", I already have
installed jdk1.6.0_01 and set the environment variables correctly as I have
been using it, what might I have done wrong? Or isn't jdk1.6 supported?

Kind Regards

Waswa Steve

Hi,

I have downloaded and tried installing the "geonetwork-install-2.1.0(2)" but
am getting an error that "Cannot find Java 1.5.0 - 1.5.0_12", I already have
installed jdk1.6.0_01 and set the environment variables correctly as I have
been using it, what might I have done wrong? Or isn't jdk1.6 supported?

I think the installer is build with java 1.5 and therefore GN might not
run with Java 1.6.

You could:

- install Java 1.5
- use the installer version that includes the jre (doesn't seems to work
on my machine at the moment...)
- get the source code from svn and build the installer with java 1.6
yourself.
- wait for more intelligent answers.

maybe it helps, regards,

Martin

I installed this version on Linux with Java 1.6, and did not get the
error, however I did get this error on Windows with Java version 1.6.

Geonetwork seems to work on Java 1.6, but Intermap is still not working
as downloaded.

Have not tried yet to compile it from source. Has anyone done this
successfully?

Regards,
Jason

Hi Waswa,
GeoNetwork is supposed to work with Java version 1.5. I know some have been able to run it on 1.6 but there are still issues that cause this not to work on all systems. The Windows installer checks for a valid version of Java and hopefully pointed you to the download page at Sun to get that version. The Windows version with JRE has the correct version embedded. That one should run the installation also with the version 1.4 to 1.6, and will use version 1.5 when running the GeoNetwork application.

Hope that helps,
Ciao,
Jeroen

Hi Jeroen,
For various reasons, we have to use Java 1.6 on our production server
for Geonetwork. Are the issues documented someplace? Geonetwork appears
to work fine with Java 1.6, Tomcat 5.5 on Ubuntu for me, but I am not
sure if there are other problems lurking. Is your recommendation NOT to
run Geonetwork with Java version 1.6? Intermap does not appear to want
to work properly at all with version 1.6 at all. :frowning:

I seemed to have corrected most of my problems with Geonetwork 2.1,
Tomcat 5.5 and Java 1.6 on Ubuntu. I am using Java 1.6 but have done
testing on 1.5 and do not notice any differences at the moment.

The system is running, although intermap is still not 100% functional
at the moment. The tmp directory of Intermap was not properly configured
on my system, which was causing my problem. On Ubuntu, I changed the
/webapps/intermap/WEB-INF/config.xml to the following

<!-- temp files -->
                <param name="tempDir"
value="/usr/share/tomcat5.5/webapps/intermap/tmp/" />
                <param name="tempDeleteMinutes" value="15" />
                <param name="tempUrl" value="/intermap/tmp" />

                <!-- http cache -->
                <param name="httpCacheDir"
value="/usr/share/tomcat5.5/webapps/intermap/httpCache/" />
                <param name="httpCacheDeleteEvery" value="60" />
                <param name="useCache" value="true" />

where the tempDir and httpCacheDir are absolute paths.

After this change, Intermap seems to work pretty much OK, except the
initial map disappears after a few seconds. However, I can add layers
from various WMS servers, and things seem to work fine. Once I diagnose
my other problems, I will send them to the list.

Best regards,
Jason
