We are in the process of setting up an infrastructure for geospatial
data, which includes a GeoNetwork server and ISO 19115/19139 metadata.
In our current non-standard metadata catalogue, we have some fields
for internal use that doesn't really map well to any field the ISO
19115 metadata structure. I suppose that we could solve this by
creating a simple extension to the profiles. However, after looking
around for instructions on how to do this, I still don't have a clear
picture of how this should be done in the best way.
Is there someone who could provide me with some guidance or pointers?
A simple example would be that I want to add a free text item
"Internal ID" to the MD_DataIdentification class and that I want this
item to be editable in my templates.
You would do this in the same manner in which the ISO 19115 extends for
taxonomy. Take a look at pages 129-136 of ISO 19115:2003(E). You would
extend the schema as needed and then document the extensions using the
metadata extension information section. I have attached an example file of
the biological extensions. (BTW, it would be nice if GeoNetwork added the
biological extensions!)
Hope this helps,
Jaci

The GeoNetwork developers are working on support for metadata profiles through a plugin mechanism. This means that you can create and maintain custom metadata profiles and validation in future versions of GeoNetwork.
We will soon have a repository available where users can store and maintain their metadata plugin modules.
Expect this in version 2.8 somewhere around August this year.
Kind regards,

The future plugin mechanism sounds promising. I look forward to having
a look at that.
I think I understand how I can extend and document a profile. The
biological profile is a good example. Ideally, I would like to have
the extensions more integrated in the GeoNetwork editor and viewer
(neater labels, better grouping, tooltips etc). What would it take to
accomplish that? Am I better off waiting for version 2.8, considering
my quite limited experience with XML/XSD/XSL/...?
Best regards,
Mattias
