[GeoNetwork-users] Geonetwork and Windows 7 64 Bit

Hi,

I'm having some issues trying to install geonetwork on a standalone Windows 7 64 bit machine. I've tried installing it to both C:\Program Files and C:\Workspace without any luck. The installer completes successfully and it seems like the server starts, but then when I type in the address (or use the start menu shortcut) to start Geonetwork it comes up with an error saying it cannot find the correct page.

Anyone got any ideas?

What version are you installing? The .jar, .exe, or from source?

I'm using version 2.6.4 exe direct from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/geonetwork/files/GeoNetwork_opensource/v2.6.4/

Do you have any other programs like Tomcat, other Jetty apps, or something
that might be using port 8080?
If open the GeoNetwork Start icon in the Task Manager Bar it will display
terminal window that shows the start up messages and communications with
GeoNetwork. This is a good place to look for clues.

Hi Byron,

Thanks for the reply. I don't have any programs using port 8080 on the machine I'm installing it on. Incidentally, I have also installed Geonetwork at work and our proxy uses port 8080. I'm assuming this will cause no end of difficulty for Geonetwork. Two questions arise from this:

1) On my standalone machine, I don't have any programs using port 8080 - any suggestions?

2) On my machine at work what do I need to do to allow geonetwork to use a different port?

Gavin

Hi Gavin,

when installing GeoNetwork/GeoServer on Windows Vista/7, you need to
run it with administrative rights or otherwise give it full read-write
permissions to the folders it's running from, otherwise it will not
work (it reads/writes stuff in those folders, not in the My Documents
area).

Hmm, Victor's suggestion may be right but I would think that would only be a
problem when you installed it in Program Files. I would assume you have the
proper permissions to your workspace directory, but maybe not. Usually I
recommend installing GeoNetwork at C:\geonetwork (you need to create the
directory first in this case then tell the installer to overwrite). Try the
C:\workspace\geonetwork install again and take a look at the logfile -
C:\workspace\geonetwork\jetty\logs\geonetwork.log and see if there are any
error messages that might help.

One more thought - what version of Java are you using?

On the other topic, changing the servlet port, you can do this in the admin
interface, but of course you cannot access this. The way I usually do it is
by opening the file C:\workspace\geonetwork\bin\jetty.xml and edit the
following line:

<Set name="port"><SystemProperty name="jetty.port" default="8080"/></Set>
to
<Set name="port"><SystemProperty name="jetty.port" default="8088"/></Set>

Now GeoNetwork should come up on your own machine at
http:\\localhost:8088\geonetwork.

You might try changing the port just to test if this is the problem..

Hi Byron,

The changing of the port seems to have worked on my work machine (which has XP and the proxy port to access the internet was 8080 as well) so that was stopping geonetwork working. The other problem is that I couldn't change the jetty.xml file without administrative rights (just as installing the program needs as well) - will this affect any Geonetwork settings or creating metadata or viewing it?

As for my machine at home I shall try to install it in C:/Geonetwork and see what result I have.

Both machines (at work and at home) are running java version 1.6.0.

Cheers,

Gavin
