Hi Pierre,
This is very good news!

Hi Jeroen,

After a very long time without news, the french project of metadata tool

based to GN (named GeoSource) is going to start (the administrative

procedures are very difficult in France…)!

No problem!

So, the project GeoSource is managed by the BRGM organization with the help

of IOW. Recently, we chose a IT company to develop the French requirements.

Who will work on the project for you?

According with our discussions in April, the development will use the last

CVS of GN. These new functionalities could be differentiated in two

categories:

  • 1 / Functionalities useful only in France: graphic design, french

profile, …

  • 2 / Functionalities useful for GN community: organisation

directories,…

So, for the second point, it will be interested to use your CVS in a

specific branch (or two branches: one france_functionalities, second

french_contribution). After, it will possible to merge the French

contribution with the actual version (2.0.2).

What do you think about this approach?

I think that a first thing that has to be done is to move the CVS repository to Subversion. We discussed this before and it seems the time to do so is now. If we all agree, I suggest Andrea and me plan when to do so?

At that point we can indeed create a specific branch for the specific French functionalities.
For the generic functionalities, I think we best work in a collaborative manner on the TRUNK instead of on multiple branches. The most important factor for success here will be discussion and coordination between developers and a clear roadmap that has been accepted by all.

This brings up the next point of action: a good issue tracker and planning tool. I have suggested using JIRA before because other projects (uDig, GeoServer, GeoTools) have had good experiences with it. We will need someone that will take the time to set this up properly. I can provide server space for it.

And, Have you some development’s rules to respect for the development team?

  • All proposed development on the TRUNK should be communicated and discussed. Rest assured that we should do the same, so don’t hesitate to ask questions on what we do. I will push my team to communicate as much as needed.
  • Commits will trigger a notification message to the commit mailing list, so proper commenting of commits is important.
  • Read the Producing Open Source Software book as it provides very good guidelines and help in this respect! (I think every commit developer should read the book! You can buy it or download it from the web)
  • Andrea is working on some administrative functionalities and will send out updates on what he is doing very soon. He has also started to use AJAX technologies with some very interesting results and improvements in speed. He’ll also send information about that approach soon.

I’m working about the description of our possible contribution and I will

send them as soon as possible to you.

OK, keep the developer mailing list copied.
Looking forward to hear from you!
Ciao,
Jeroen

Thanks,
