Hi Gavin,
I’ll go through your points below.

However, is there any more documentation on how to configure and customise geonetwork? How it works internally? I need to change the look and feel to integrate it into another website and modify some of the functionality.
Two things:
a- The beta1 release is REALLY beta, we will create a second beta within days from now and put it up. You could check out the sourcecode from the CVS and build the installer yourself if you want. There is lots of improvements and changes to it, including the metadata editor & presentation that have gotten a lot of rework. I would strongly suggest not to build an operational system on the first beta release.
b- Yes, there is more documentation. The documentation and other related stuff is on the project homepage: http://geonetwork.sourceforge.net . In fact, I also wanted to announce that shortly as it is much of a work in progress. Many thing need to be added and the tutorials and editor manual need revisions. Not all is visible at the moment, but have a look at a.o. the Developer folder. Make sure you go through the Jeeves document. If you have good content to be added, don’t hesitate to contribute! make your own account and add documents, screenshots etc… in there. If useful we can move these or merge them with existing documents.
- Do Z39.50 queries work automatically? If I register it with the FGDC clearinghouse wills queries against it work.
Yes, but there was a configuration error in the installer that prevents it from working. Do the following:
You will have to modify the config.xml file, line 135 (or near that line). It reads
and should be changed to
Than restart tomcat and you should be set. Try the FAO node first to confirm it is working.
Presentation of FGDC metadata should be comparable to the ISO19115 presentation but may need further improvement.
- Can geonetwork harvest metadata from other Z39.50 nodes so that searches are local?
No, currently not. Not sure what the future will bring as others have indicated they need the same. This is one of those things I hope others will pick up in one way or another. We are implementing OGC catalog services version 2 that includes harvesting of compliant nodes, but do not foresee to implement harvesting according to the version 1 (Z39.50) protocol.
Hope this helps,
Greetings from Rome,
Jeroen
