hi all,
I'd like to propose a change to the installer :
Wouldn't it be convenient if, at install time, you could enter some
information regarding the database ?
When you need to install more than one version of GeoNetwork on the same
machine, the McKoiDB ports need to be different for each installation.
However the installer seems to pick up the DB connection info from GN's
config.xml as it was when you created the installer. If the first installed
version is running, the second installation will fail to do its database
set-up. To do a second installation you need to build a new installer, which
is time-consuming especially when you need to FTP it to your target machine.
From some old documentation (like
http://mimis.simos.googlepages.com/Geonetwork-Simos.pdf) I gather that in
the past, there used to be something like a "database tab" in the installer?
Is there any particular reason this is no longer there?
Kind regards
Heikki Doeleman

Hi Heikki,
Yes, that tab is no longer there because we decided to simplify the installer to the maximum for the general user. This means we no longer have a server and a desktop installer like in the past. As a consequence it also means that developers have a bit a harder time when running into cases like you explain. I think we all recognize that. Maybe it means you'd have to make your own installer config files or another option (maybe command line parameters that would be picked up by the installer or so!?). But the most important ideas behind one simple installer are the ease for the general user and the ease to maintain just one installer and not two.
Ciao,
Jeroen
