Hello Ines,
Hi Ines,
I have used both applications to some extent and can say a few words about them. Geonetwork and Chameloen are really for totally differernt purposes. Chamelon can save you the trouble of building a Mapserver application from scratch. It includes many widgets for the front-end of mapping applications, so that you do not have to write all the user interface code from scratch. GeoNetwork on the other hand is really (correct me developers if I am wrong here) aimed at organizing the metadata related to all the geographic information that you might display on a website that you would create with Mapserver/Chameleon or other similar web mapping platform (e.g. ArcIMS).
GeoNetwork excels at the organization of metadata, while Chamelon (or really Mapserver upon which it is based) is aimed more at the creation of web mapping applications. You might have data sets that you use for a number of different applications, or that you use with other GIS applications, which you could use GeoNetwork to organize all the metadata of your GIS datasets.
They are really totally different applications. GeoNetwork (through Intermap) is capable of displaying WMS compliant information that MapServer can serve, but it cannot serve as a web based map server itself. Chameleon merely simplifies the task of the creation of a web-based application, but will not necessarily provide the organization of the metadata that GeoNetwork is capable of.
We run both our mapping application and GeoNetwork seperately, since much of the data that is used for the web-mapping application is used else where. Tighter integration might be possible, but I am not sure about this one...
Anyway, my two cents...

Subject: [GeoNetwork-users] Geonetwork software
Hello, I?m learning about GeoNetwork. I have the map site working now on
ms4w (chameleon) and I want to know wich are the differences between
GeoNetwork and chameleon proyect.
I see Geonetwork have manuals, a friendly interface, but I want to know
about the functionality of GeoNetwork in comparison with chameleon to show
maps, create widgets, etc.
Thank you very much!
