[GeoNetwork-users] Internet browser issues with GeoNetwork

Hi,

I am using GeoNetwork 2.1 beta 5. I'm wondering if there are recommended
browsers to be used with GN? I generally use Firefox but thinking that I
would like to deploy GN to our users who use mostly IE in the near future, I
tried to use GN with other browsers such as Internet Explorer 6.0 and Opera
9.2.

In IE 6, the main GN page comes up OK, though the 3 boxes containing the 3
search types are not nicely aligned. When using the Advanced Search and
clicking on the graphic to the right of the Keywords field, the pull-down
shows up OK but the second drop down box in the Where option overwrites the
Keywords dropdown. When going to Geographic Search, the "loading map
viewer" continuously run with no completion. When I try to run Intermap by
typing in the URL http://mypc:8085/intermap/ the map comes up but the
navigation controls are disabled and I have a javascript icon in the lower
left of my window indicating issues with intermap/srv/en/map.getMain.

In Opera 9.2, the main GN page comes up OK, and the 3 search type boxes are
well aligned. The Keywords pulldown list works well. When going to the
Geographic Search, the map viewer starts up OK (just like in Firefox) but
when I click on Open Map Viewer nothing happens. I look in the Opera Error
Console and see some messages such as
CSS - http://mypc:8085/intermap/intermap-embedded.css?
Linked-in stylesheet
Declaration syntax error
Line 701:
filter: alpha(opacity=50);
When I try to run Intermap by using the URL, the map comes up but the
navigation do not work, they don't appear to be disabled as in IE, they just
don't work (e.g., zoom in tries to pan the map).

I have a hunch that these issues have to do with java scripting and/or my
browser configuration. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Best regards, Bob

Hi Bob,

up to now only 2 browsers can be used with geonetwork: firefox and IE6.
For normal navigation maybe any browser is ok but for the Ajax code in
the administration pages firefox and IE must be used. This is due to the XSL
transformations made on the browser and only firefox and IE support it.

Firefox works perfectly because it is the browser I use to create the web
interface (so it is the reference browser). IE works (more or less) but it
is not recommended to use it because some pages have artifacts that
it was not possible to fix. It does not follow the standards and it is a real
pain to make geonetwork working on it.

Cheers,
Andrea

Thanks Andrea for the information.

I don't have IE7, but plan to find a place where it's running and make
some additional tests to see if there's any improvement over IE6. GN
has some very big potential for us (we are a state agency here in the
U.S.) but many people still use IE for their work, thus my concern.

Thanks again, Bob

Bob

I just loaded IE 7 to test this. The map still will not display.

This is a problem for me since all of our organization uses IE. Not my
choice and unfortunately out of my control. I have had no problems running
GN 2.03 on IE. What are there other issues (artifacts) other than map
display that do not work on IE? If it is only administrative tools that have
the problems and not query tools (other than the map) I may be ok.

Hi Byron,

Thanks for the feedback on IE7. I haven't been able to get access to
that yet so your comments help greatly.

When running GN as an end user on IE6 I get the problems noted at the
start of this thread, e.g., not being able to the Geographic Search.
The Simple Search seems to be OK, but with Advanced Search I have the
"graphic artifact" noted in my initial post where the pulldown for
keywords is overwritten by one of the Where fields. In general, as you
probably noticed, it appears that in IE the data entry fields and field
labels don't align as nicely as they do in Firefox.

I don't yet do much in admin mode. I imported some metadata via batch
mode and then went back and imported the thumbnail. That worked OK.

So for me in the context of IE problems and at this point in my testing,
other than the cosmetic things with the worst being the pulldown list
being overwritten by the Where field, the biggest thing is not having
the graphical search ability or the ability to run Intermap. Even
though I mentioned Opera in my original posting, Opera accounts for less
than 1% of our total browser use. It is something that I use to test
site compatibility. However, I would like to see GN run better on IE
than it currently does. Even though I'm not a developer, I do work with
a number of developers, so I can share some of Andrea's pain getting the
code to work with IE. Hopefully some of these bigger issues can be
ironed out at some point.

Regards, Bob
