Is GeoServer an obligatory addition for GeoNetwork 2.4.2 or 2.5_unstable? It seems to be optional as long as one can point to some WMS service for the map. However, I do not understand all aspects of GeoNetwork - especially when using OGC harvest nodes.

hello wolfgang,
the harvesting for OGC web services is an approach to hold the service
metadata - which is mainly included in the ows capability documents - up to
date. it is somehow impossible to generate this metadata by hand ;-).
therefor the information of the service and the information about of the
content of a service (featuretypes/layers/... - see ogc ows common spec) is
extracted and then the corresponding metadata files will be created and
stored in the geonetwork database.
the idea is to create a dataset metadata record for each layer and each
featuretype. this elements give the standardized access to an underlying
dataset which the service reads.
one problem is, that the dataset which is served by the service is normally
not described by standardized metadata records. if it is, maybe the access
service - like wms/wfs/wcs can read this to and give this information to the
user of the service. for using this approach, there is the metadataURL tag in
the content description of the ows caps. in such a case users have only one
single point of access - the service url. which this handling the service
metadata and the corresponding dataset metadata can be held in sync!!
to exchange the metadata sets for services and dataset/dataseries, the
catalogue service can be used. in this case the tight coupling of service
metadata and data metadata is not given any more. you need a linkage between
the service- and data-metadata and the records must have an id (maybe uuid)
to identify them.
i hope this can help a little bit.
regards,
armin
