[GeoNetwork-users] Metadata appears then goes blank

I've installed GeoNetwork (as vanilla as possible - just changed port
from 8080 to 8083 in a few places) on Windows Vista Business and loaded
the sample data.

I search the metadata records and find the records I expect, but when I
try to expand the Metadata of a record (by hitting its + sign) what I
see is the Metadata button switch to Loading..., then the metadata and
thumbnail appear briefly before being replaced by a large blank area.

Any ideas on what may cause this are greatly appreciated.

You are quite correct!

Using IE7 I see the problem - using Firefox 2 it works fine.

Many thanks for the workaround although at the site I am contemplating
using GeoNetwork the Mozilla browser is not part of their SOE so I'm
keen to know if a fix might be possible too.

If one of you is able to identify the problem and fix the JavaScript, that would be great. We will apply the fix to the code repository so it is part of a next release. Otherwise it will probably take a while before it is fixed.

Jeroen,

Here is my Sept25 post on this issue. It might help:

Hi,

For those of you who, like me, are stuck using IE as browser.....

When I loaded GN2.1 and used IE6 to view the metadata I ran into a
disappearing content problem when viewing metadata on the main page. The
behavior is this: I search the metadata, click the metadata tab for a
selected record, the blind drops down, the metadata flashes, and then the
blind goes blank. As far as I can tell the problem has its roots in the
"hasLayout" property of IE/Win. Other IE/Win AJAX display problems, such as
non-overlapping dropdowns (guilotine) problems also likely result from this.

I fixed the dissapearing content problem on my install by altering the
web\geonetwork\scripts\scriptaculous\effects.js by commenting out the line
"restoreAfterFinish: true,"
in the "Effect.BlindDown" function. It fixed my immediate problem, but I am
unsure if there may be other as of yet unseen drawbacks to this fix. If
anyone has some general solutions to "hasLayout" properties issues please
pass them on.

Cheers,
Byron

Hello,

To elaborate a bit further on my last post...

My own digging into this issue leads me to believe that it has its roots in
the "hasLayout" property in Windows IE. This feature/bug can lead to many
other AJAX misbehaviors. A discussion of the issues and history of
hasLayout can be found at http://www.satzansatz.de/cssd/onhavinglayout.html
http://www.satzansatz.de/cssd/onhavinglayout.html

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Byron

Hi all,

I am against changing some external library, such scriptaculous, to fit our
needs, even if it is needed to fix something.
If the Effect.BlindDown scriptaculous feature is broken, we can:
step 1) not use that feature; it's only eye candy and can be replaced by a
simple Element.show(): it's not as cool, but it works;
step 2) tell the scriptaculous guys there is such an error, that can be fixed
that way, so that the library get fixed and we can have our eyecandy back

If you like the idea, I can commit the change quickly.

Hi,

I agree with this view. Commenting out the restoreAfterFinish was a
temporary fix at best.
I would suggest that the simple Element.show() only be used if browser = IE.
Let the eye candy stay for non IE users.

Jeroen,

Here is my Sept25 post on this issue. It might help:

Hi,

For those of you who, like me, are stuck using IE as browser.....

When I loaded GN2.1 and used IE6 to view the metadata I ran into a
disappearing content problem when viewing metadata on the main page. The
behavior is this: I search the metadata, click the metadata tab for a
selected record, the blind drops down, the metadata flashes, and then
the
blind goes blank. As far as I can tell the problem has its roots in the
"hasLayout" property of IE/Win. Other IE/Win AJAX display problems, such
as non-overlapping dropdowns (guilotine) problems also likely result from
this.

I fixed the dissapearing content problem on my install by altering the
web\geonetwork\scripts\scriptaculous\effects.js by commenting out the
line
"restoreAfterFinish: true,"
in the "Effect.BlindDown" function. It fixed my immediate problem, but I
am unsure if there may be other as of yet unseen drawbacks to this fix.
If
anyone has some general solutions to "hasLayout" properties issues please
pass them on.

Cheers,
Byron

Good Morning,

OK, I think I have found the proper fix. This suggestion was from the
scriptaculous website.

Disappearing content fix

Posted by tryin_to_learn (71.236.24.233) 5 months ago.

I was having an IE6 problem of where the Blind Down? would work fine except
that once it had completed, all the content would disappear. The fix ended
up being very easy. It was a “hasLayout” problem and was fixed by simply
giving the div a width:100% style.

I can’t take credit for this myself. I posted for help at sitepoint.com and
Paul O’B came to the rescue. However, I thought it might be helpful to post
the fix here for others who might have the same issue.
---------------------------------------

To fix the disappearing content problem in GeoNetwork 2.1, two functions
need to be altered in scripts/gn_search.js. They are gn_showSingleMetadata
and gn_showMetadata. Add the line div.style.width = '100%'; after the line
div.style.display = 'none'; in each function and the problem goes away.
This fix works for both IE6 and IE7. No need to alter scriptaculous code or
make exceptions for IE!

Cheers,
Byron

Hi all,

I am against changing some external library, such scriptaculous, to fit
our
needs, even if it is needed to fix something.
If the Effect.BlindDown scriptaculous feature is broken, we can:
step 1) not use that feature; it's only eye candy and can be replaced by a
simple Element.show(): it's not as cool, but it works;
step 2) tell the scriptaculous guys there is such an error, that can be
fixed
that way, so that the library get fixed and we can have our eyecandy back

If you like the idea, I can commit the change quickly.

Thanks Byron!
I commit the fix today. Great to see these kind of issues being resolved by the community!
