Does anyone know the Pro's (more of this) and Con's of GeoNetwork and
RS Catalog (now called Apollo by erdas)
As part of an evaluation process, someone asked this question. Since I
know nothing about other catalog its quite difficult. I'm sure someone
in the list would have done some benchmarking or comparison. Can you
please share your thoughts here.
What I understand from the list is, GN can be fully customized.. there
are two good examples given by the list users. Can the same be done on
apollo?
Then can we use PostgresSQ/PostGIS as DB engine on GN? I read the
manual and it say that there is a DB engine built in. For the spatial
data and queries, I hope it has the similar features as PostGIS.
Anything else that we should know while comparing?
We use a PostGIS backend to our GN instance, which works fine.
It's not clear to me what you mean by "For the spatial data and queries, I hope it has the similar features as PostGIS." GN doesn't really store spatial data or do queries against it, except for the extents of records. It's a metadata plant.
I'm afraid I know nothing of Erdas. Perhaps contacting Erdas itself would be wise.

That would greatly facilitate such comparison.

GeoNetwork OpenSource is maintained at GeoNetwork - Geographic Metadata Catalog download | SourceForge.net
we use GeoNetwork to manage our data but I also had to evaluate some pro’s and con’s of Erdas Apollo.
As you have read in the manual, GN is a metadata catalog application. The embedded database is used to manage the functionality of GN which includes all the metadata, users, usergroups and priviliges…
GN also implements interfaces to use a postgres, mysql or oracle db for this.
There’s no management of spatial data and queries inside GN. But you can use the embedded mapserver (geoserver) and intermap to enable access and the visualisation of geospatial data. Therefore, you can use your own geodatabase e.g. postGIS. Spatial queries can be done using geoserver (or any other geo web server). Via GeoNetwork you can link your geo web services (e.g. based on mapserver and geo database) and direct access using the embedded Intermap web map viewer.
Erdas Apollo is a platform to manage and deliver spatial data. There exists different attributes of this software solution.
The Apollo Server is the core of the Apollo solution…it manages and serves large volumes of geospatial data (= geo web server), and includes a catalog to create metadata and a web client provides data discovery and visualization
The Apollo Image Manager (which should be similar to GN) enables to search for data and metadata via a web client and analyse or visualize spatial data in an embedded web map viewer. The Image manager can be used with Apollo Server or any other geo web server.
GN is open sorce software so it can be fully customized. I’m not sure if customization of the Apollo client can be done by the user/administrator. I remember that the distributor (Erdas) offers customization of the software/client… but this will cost you money just like the software itself.
