Yea, works fine. Pay attention to the rights of the folders. (Owner should be the user that is running tomcat/jetty and should habe appropriate rights).
If you want to use the new jetty-version (because of ajp) just install it and copy the folders from geonetwork/web/* into the webapps-folder of jetty and run it. Works fine for geonetwork but I had some problems with the geoserver in gn (one machine worked, another not). Fixed it with help of http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/Dealing+with+native+JAI.
